Ransomware is no longer just a threat to corporate networks; it has found its way to the web. In a WordPress ransomware attack, hackers gain access to your site and encrypt your crucial files (like wp-config.php or everything in wp-content/uploads) or your entire database.

The Extortion Phase

Once the encryption is complete, the attacker replaces your homepage with a ransom note, demanding payment in Bitcoin or Monero in exchange for the decryption key. If you don't pay, your data is lost forever.

Prevention and Mitigation

The only foolproof defense against ransomware is having reliable, off-site backups. If your site is encrypted, you can simply wipe the server, patch the vulnerability that allowed them in, and restore your site from a backup taken before the infection. Never pay the ransom, as there is no guarantee the attackers will provide the key.
